Nouns and adjectives in Macedonian have three genders in the singular:
- masculine (машки род),
- feminine (женски род), and
- neuter (среден род).
When you want to describe a noun using an adjective or adjectives, you have to make sure that the gender of the adjective (i.e. the adjective ending) matches the gender of the noun. For example, бел фустан 'white dress' (masculine), бела боја 'white color' (feminine), бело куче 'white dog' (neuter).
The demonstrative ова 'this' can be used to point something out, as in the example: Ова е куче. 'This is a dog.' The full range of demonstratives in Macedonian will be explained in another unit.
