Introduction

In this 12-week course for children in elementary school, we'll learn the Macedonian alphabet as we practice beginner-level dialogues on basic topics such as introductions (names, ages) and numbers. Instruction will be in English and Macedonian (gradually decreasing English and increasing Macedonian as the students' knowledge increases). We will practice reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as learn about Macedonian culture through artifacts such as games, songs and videos. We will use a workbook created by the Macedonian Language E-Learning Center to practice reading and writing as we learn each letter. Clips from the resources listed below will be used in all the classes as we learn the Macedonian alphabet. Children can also use them at home to review the material covered in class. For more advanced levels, we have provided additional resources below.

Week 1

In this lesson, we'll introduce ourselves orally using this template:

  • Јас се викам .... (I call myself ....)
  • Мило ми е! (Glad to meet you!)

We'll also learn how to read and write three Macedonian letters (A, M, E) and learn some words containing these letters.

Lastly, we'll learn the Macedonian alphabet song from the popular TV show "Disheveled Alphabet" and hear the sounds of all the letters in Macedonian.

For the last 5 minutes of class, we'll go over how to fill out any remaining exercises in the first two pages of the workbook for homework and the resources for each letter below. The students can watch these resources on their own!

Week 2

In this lesson, we'll first review the first three letters of the alphabet by checking our homework. We'll sing the alphabet song we learned last time.

We'll then review our names and expand with the following dialogues (orally only):

  • Како се вика тој? Тој се вика ...
  • Како се вика таа? Таа се вика ...

Then, we'll learn three new letters: Т, О, К.

We'll end the class with a game of bingo: the students will draw a 3x3 matrix and the teacher will read a Macedonian word they've encountered. The students will write each word the teacher reads in a different field of the matrix, which field is their choice. Once the teacher has read nine words, the teacher will call out an English word that translates one of the Macedonian words. The children will need to cross out the Macedonian word. The first child to make a row, column, or diagonal line of three crossed out words yells out "Bingo!" and is the winner. That child can come up with nine words for the next game (this class or next class).

We'll end the class with a different song about the alphabet, (Македонска азбука).

Then, we'll learn two new letters: В, С.

We'll end the class with a game of bingo.

We'll end the class with a game that you can also play on your computer at home (Сладолед)!

We'll learn how to express how old we are by modeling the dialogue:

  • Колку години имаш?
  • Јас имам .... години

Then, we'll learn two new letters: Х, Ѕ.

Week 9

We'll start with checking homework, reviewing the letters and numbers we have learned so far by asking each other about our ages.

We'll continue to practice the numbers and learn how to express addition and subtraction:

  • Колку е ... плус/минус ...?
  • ... плус/минус ... е ...

Then, we'll learn two new letters: Д, Б.

We'll end the class with counting with the first part of this counting song.

Week 10

We'll start with checking homework and reviewing the letters and numbers we have learned so far through dialogues.

We'll learn the numbers 11-20 by continuing to work with the counting song from last time.

Then, we'll learn two new letters: Г, Ф.

We'll end the class with a game of hangman with numbers vocabulary. The teacher will draw the noose and will write down an underline for each letter in a number she is thinking of. The children will need to guess letters in the name of that number. When they are correct, the teacher will write down the letter above the underline in the correct place in the word. When they are incorrect, the teacher will draw a part of the body (head, arm, etc.). The first child to guess the word correctly is the winner and thinks of the next word. If the teacher can draw all the body parts before the children guess the number, the teacher wins and thinks of the next word.
