Introduction

In this 12-week course for children in elementary school, we'll continue to build on vocabulary from Macedonian 1 and 2 by learning and reviewing introductions, ages, numbers, colors, body parts, animal names, dates , including months of the year and days of the week. Instruction will be in English and Macedonian (gradually decreasing English and increasing Macedonian as the students' knowledge increases). We will practice reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as learn about Macedonian culture through artifacts such as games, songs and videos. Clips from the resources listed below will be used in all the classes as we learn the Macedonian alphabet. Children can also use them at home to review the material covered in class. For more advanced levels, we have provided additional resources below.

Week 1

We'll start the class by introducing ourselves and reviewing or learning greetings such as Здраво, Добро утро, добар ден, добра вечер, добра ноќ.

Б: Тој се вика....
А: Како се вика таа?

Week 2

We'll review any sticking points from last class through dialogues and then continue to practice numbers through addition and subtraction as well as counting objects. If there's time, we'll also review or learn the basic colors.

Week 3

We'll review and continue to learn the vocabulary of colors through dialogues such as:

  • Која е оваа боја?
  • Која е твојата омилена боја?
  • Црвена/жолта/зелена/сина/сива/црна/бела...

Week 4

We'll expand on the dialogues we learned by asking about other people's favorite colors:

  • Која е негова омилена боја?

Week 5

We'll start to learn or review names of animals so that we can describe our stuffed animals.

  • Што е ова?
  • Ова е алигатор.
  • Каква боја е алигаторот?

  • Диносаурус.
  • Како се вика твојот диносаурус?
  • Марко.

Week 6

We will review the names of animals that are often toys and also review counting animals. We'll read the book Гости and get an introduction to ordinal numbers (first, second, third etc.).

  • Колку мечиња има тука?
  • Тука има седум мечиња.
  • Каква боја е првото мече?

  • Колку еднорози имаш?
  • Три.
  • Како се вика првиот еднорог?

Week 7

We'll continue reading the book and review/solidify the ordinal numbers through songs and games where someone gets first, second, third etc. place (прво/второ/трето место, прва/втора/трета награда). We'll also talk about what grade students are in (прво/второ/трето/четврто/петто одделение). We'll use this video for the Macedonian alphabet to read the first/second/third row as well as review the letters and colors.

We'll review the ordinal numbers and learn the months of the year, then combine them to learn/talk about dates:

Week 9

We'll review the material from the previous class and talk about first-graders with this popular Macedonian poem that many first-graders memorize:

We'll learn the days of the week and practice with dialogues such as:

We'll combine some of the actions we've learned so far with the days of the week and discuss what we do each day:
